Spitaki House

In the 1980s, our clients built their own family home - thirty years on, this artist and historian were looking for a fresh beginning.

It was a pleasure to work with them and we were impressed with how they responded to our suggestions along the way.

A love of craft, the coastal landscape and an appreciation of the practical, compact design of the iconic Hurst Seager state house were some of the elements that formed our initial design conversations with clients, Nick and Barbara. And the result is Spitaki House.

This new build perches just above Nick and Barbara’s original home, replacing one of the small working man’s cottages, with its form nestled into the hill, facing Island Bay beach. The house responds to its environment with a pared-back sculptural form, weathered cedar cladding and a roof that stealthily hugs the hillside. Inside, a rippled-ply ceiling cradles the jewel-box spaces. This house is oriented to maximise the sun and views to the north and east, with multiple verandah spaces cunningly managing the fickle Wellington coastal winds.

Simple but cleverly planned, with outside terraces contained within the main form, this house allows the well-lived lives of the occupants to shine through.
