About us

Each architectural project we create evolves holistically from the poetics of landscape & craft, cultural context, sound technical understanding, budget pragmatics & client aspirations.

Founded in 2013 by Registered Architects Ana O’Connell and Tim Lovell, Lo’CA is an NZIA Architectural Practice based on Wellington’s south coast, working across a variety of scales, throughout New Zealand.

Our design process is informed by a strong collaborative approach within the studio and the partnerships we foster with clients, consultants and builders..

With an open-minded approach and clear design intent, we create thoughtfully nuanced buildings that celebrate people’s lives and connect to the New Zealand landscape.

A southerner at heart, in an alternate world Tim would be making wildlife documentaries, and a love of the NZ landscape always foregrounds his architectural thinking. A John Lautner aficionado; the innovative use of materials, humble poetics of construction and an intimate understanding of inhabitation ring true with Tim’s own design approach. Outside of work he's just discovering his camera again as the kids grow.

A university classmate of LOCA’s other business partner Ana O’Connell, Tim came to architecture with a background in professional photography. With a number of years’ work at both John Wright and Parsonson Architects as a project architect, Tim has extensive experience focussed predominantly on high end residential and commercial work.

Director

A constant tinkerer, be it jewellery in the garden shed or model making at work, Ana has a fascination for detail and carefully crafted design born from classic DIY NZ heritage and travels through Japan and beyond. Key for her is placing people, their daily rituals and their inhabitation of space at the heart of LoCA’s design work. She also has particular interest in understanding and working with the landscape and historical contexts of each architectural project.

Ana’s background has included working on a variety of celebrated projects at Tennent+ Brown Architects she then led project teams at Jasmax Architects on a diverse range of award winning residential, institutional and education projects.

When not wielding a hammer or testing design ideas on her own home renovations,

you can find Kate on the hockey pitch or in the garden, prepping for a family wholefoods feast.

A people person at heart, she enjoys a close working relationship with clients right through all

stages of a project. With a background that includes sustainable and social housing architecture, Kate is driven by

how great design can inspire and uplift and the positive effect it has on personal well-being.
