Designed for a couple seeking to move to Wanaka full time, this home needed to be comfortable, sustainable, artistic and “not boring.”

Located on a rear suburban site in “Old Wanaka” with neighbours in close proximity, the architecture responds carefully to its location, capturing views to northwest and across the lake to the southwest, while also maintaining privacy. A central courtyard and a carefully positioned clerestory draw natural light deep into the heart of the home.

The design prioritises quality of space over quantity, delivering a home that's intimate yet generous enough to welcome visiting family and friends.

Sustainability sits at the heart of the project. High‑performance insulation, vapour control, mechanical ventilation, and passive solar principles ensure year‑round comfort, while hydronic heating, solar panels, and battery storage further reduce environmental impact. The home is crafted to age gracefully with its owners — key living spaces, the kitchen, dining, main bedroom, and bathroom are all easily accessible on the primary level.
