The Hill House

A house on a hill designed for shelter, light and views.

At its centre, the dining area forms an interstitial link between the two axes of the house. With large opening doors, it serves both as a link between and part of the two outdoor spaces, the west facing sheltered “afternoon” deck and the enclosed lawn. It also serves as a link between the bedroom wing and the rest of the house.

Located on an exposed ridge in Khandallah this is a house of competing demands. Light and wind in one direction / views in other directions. Large parts of the site steeply sloping / a brief requiring large flat lawns for the kids and level access.

Our solution is a courtyard house with a folding roof form that allows for large flat sheltered outdoor spaces, and sun and views to penetrate into the occupied spaces of the house.
