Lake House

Positioned on a generous waterfront site in Queenstown, this home is shaped by its landscape — designed to embrace the environment while carving out moments of shelter and seclusion.

An S-shaped plan gives the house its rhythm, forming two distinct courtyards that capture the morning and afternoon light. Each opens toward the lake or mountains, while naturally sheltering the home from prevailing winds.

The design moves between the intimate and the expansive — quiet, protected spaces that give way to sweeping views and a strong connection to the outdoors.

Climate was a central consideration throughout. Deep eaves and operable screens temper summer heat gain, while thoughtfully arranged interiors ensure the home remains warm and inviting through Queenstown's cooler months.

The programme is generous, with spaces conceived to support and celebrate the clients' passions and way of living.

Bounded by a lakeside walking path and an elevated road, privacy presented a real challenge. The response was deliberate — internal courtyards and careful siting work together to prevent direct sightlines into the home, preserving a sense of sanctuary without compromising its relationship with the surrounding landscape.

Feng Shui principles informed the design from the outset. The five classical elements — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water — were woven into the spatial sequence, materiality, and character of the home.
