For a Wellington couple changing gear and looking ahead to the future, the clients desire was for a place that operated in two modes; a lasting home for them and holiday retreat for extended family. Some years before they had found a site outside of Wanaka; past the kanuka bush and outcrops of schist up Mount Iron a rocky knoll faces north, where panoramic views unfold of Mount Aspiring and the ranges beyond.
A faceted roof carves dramatically over the main house, as if a remnant from the area’s dynamic glacial age, the warm wooden form extending out to a sheltered courtyard behind. A standalone crib nestles above, while the entryways frame and guide views with spaces to pause and take in the landscape beyond. Over time the building’s cladding will weather & age taking on the silvered patina of the surrounding native bush.
